Botanicals For The Brain Health

Did you know that the brain has 2 regions that are able to repair itself which includes the hippocampus (related to long term memory) and the olfactory bulb (related to our sense of smell).

Did you know that the theory of localization has actually been disproven and that the brain can adapt when deficits occur.

My favorite nootropic (brain enhancing) plants are:

Ashwagandha: I love this plant because it increases the length of dendrites in the brain, has neuroprotective properties, and has adaptogenic properties which support all the body's functions.  This can translate into faster learning and enhanced memory.

Gotu Kola: considered a brain tonic, a rejuvenating nervine (supports nerve health), and an aid for intelligence and memory.  This plant contains natural chemicals called triterpenoids which has been shown to reduce anxiety and enhance mental functioning.

Rosemary: this plant actually contains compounds that prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine ( a neurotransmitter that is responsible for  forming memories) and it also improves circulation within the brain.

Gingko:  Great for the brain because it increases the blood flow throughout the body and the brain by its ability to expand blood vessels.  The natural chemicals in gingko called flavonoids and terpenoids also play a role in decreasing free radicals which aid in fighting Alzheimer’s and other diseases.

Bacopa: This plant has been used in Indian medicine for over 3000 years to promote memory, learning, and increase concentration.
