Gotu kola has traveled from herbal traditions into the modern bathroom under a shorter name: cica. On an ingredient label, look for Centella asiatica. Its leafy simplicity makes a compelling story; the more interesting question is what a particular extract, in a particular formula, has actually been shown to do.
A promising plant, a specific preparation
Researchers are interested in centella compounds because of their activity in skin-repair and collagen-related pathways. In a finished cream, the botanical often works alongside moisturizing ingredients, so the whole formula matters. An oil infusion, a serum, and an oral extract each ask a different research question.
A 2026 randomized trial adds a useful new piece: 112 middle-aged Korean women received a specific oral centella extract or placebo for 12 weeks. Researchers reported improvements in wrinkle measures and water loss from skin; hydration, elasticity, and brightness changes were modest. Efficacy analysis used the participants who followed the protocol, and a short study in a particular population cannot answer questions about long-term effects or every commercial product. Oral results also cannot validate a homemade topical oil.
How to choose with curiosity
If you enjoy botanical skin care, choose a well-labeled finished product and introduce it into an otherwise familiar routine. Give yourself a clear question: does this make dry skin feel more comfortable, or does it sting? A photograph in consistent lighting is more informative than checking the mirror every hour. More ingredients and a higher price are not evidence of a better fit.
Patch-test first, use clean hands, and avoid applying a new product to broken or actively inflamed skin. A cosmetic is not a substitute for assessing a changing lesion or an infected wound. Sun protection and a tolerable moisturizer remain practical foundations for caring for skin over time.
Give a new formula a fair introduction
The most useful beauty experiment changes one thing at a time. Keep your cleanser, moisturizer, and other familiar products steady while introducing a cica formula. If you start a new serum, exfoliant, and mask in the same week, it becomes much harder to know which one your skin likes.
Choose the texture you will enjoy
A lightweight serum may suit someone who likes layers; a cream may fit a shorter routine. The name of the botanical does not tell you whether the finished formula will feel rich, sticky, matte, or barely there. Read the directions and choose according to the experience you want, as well as the ingredients you tolerate.
Look for comfortable, observable change
Notice whether skin feels less tight after cleansing, whether the product sits comfortably under makeup, and whether it causes any irritation. These are useful everyday observations. They are different from measuring collagen production or reconstructing a clinical trial in your bathroom.
For photographs, use the same room, time of day, and distance from the mirror. Lighting can make texture appear dramatically different without a biological change. A little consistency gives you a more honest impression.
The same principle applies when reading research. An improvement from a study participant's own starting point is not automatically the same as an improvement compared with placebo. Look for which comparison the authors actually report, the size of the change, and how long it lasted. A statistically detectable result can still be modest in the mirror.
Before you add a supplement
Centella deserves further research, especially independent studies comparing standardized preparations. It does not yet justify a universal “collagen-building” supplement recommendation. Before taking it orally, review pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver health, and medication considerations with a qualified professional. Appreciating a plant can include asking patient, precise questions about it.
Put it into practice
Naturopathic foundations
How do I build a simple cica skincare routine?
Let a gentle cleanser, a well-tolerated moisturizer, and daily sun protection form the base. Introduce one cica product at a time so you can notice how your skin responds. Keep the rest of the routine quiet enough to understand what is helping.
A mind–body practice
A kinder moment at the mirror
Set down the magnifying mirror. Apply a familiar moisturizer with a light touch, noticing temperature and texture. Unclench your jaw. Name one thing your body allowed you to do today that has nothing to do with its appearance.
For education and reflection. Individual needs vary. For persistent symptoms or personal guidance, seek additional care from a qualified clinician or appropriate specialist.
